Mary's anointing of Jesus for burial

| 6Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it out on his head as he reclined at the table. | 3Meanwhile Jesus was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the house of Simon the leper, and a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment made of pure nard. She broke the alabaster jar and poured out the ointment on his head. | 2They prepared a supper for Jesus there. Martha was serving, and Lazarus was one of the people reclining at the table with him. 3Then Mary took a pound of expensive ointment made of pure nard, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. |
| 8When his disciples saw it, they were indignant and said, “For what purpose is this waste? 9This ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money could have been given to the poor.” | 4But some were expressing indignation to one another, saying, “For what purpose has this ointment been wasted? 5It could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money could have been given to the poor.” So they began scolding her. | 4Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was about to betray him, said, 5“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” 6(He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief0x3B he was the keeper of the moneybag and would pilfer what was put into it.) |
| 10Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you causing trouble for this woman? For she has done a good deed to me. 11You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me. 12She has put this ointment on my body to prepare me for burial. 13Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial to her.” | 6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why are you causing trouble for her? She has done a good deed to me. 7For you always have the poor with you, and you can do good to them whenever you wish, but you do not always have me. 8She has done what she could0x3B she has anointed my body beforehand to prepare me for burial. 9Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of as a memorial to her.” | 7So Jesus said, “Leave her alone0x3B she has kept this ointment for the day of my burial. 8For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.” |
