Mark 11:1-11
Luke 19:29-44
John 12:12-19
1When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethsphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples ahead, 2telling them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with it. Untie them and bring them to me.
1When they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethsphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples ahead 2and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has sat. Untie it and bring it here.
29As he drew near to Bethsphage and Bethany, at the mount called Olivet, he sent two of his disciples ahead, 30saying, “Go into the village ahead of you. As you enter it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
12On the next day, when a large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
3If anyone says anything to you, say, ‘The Lord has need of them.’ And immediately he will send them.”
3If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it.’ Then he will immediately send it here.”
31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’ ”
6So the disciples went and did just as Jesus had directed them.
4So they went and found a colt outside in the street tied at a door, and they untied it. 5But some of the people who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6They answered them just as Jesus had instructed, and the people let them go.
32So those who were sent went off and found it just as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34They said, “The Lord has need of it.”
7They brought the donkey and the colt and laid on them their garments, and Jesus sat on them.
7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and put their garments on it, and he sat on it.
35Then they brought the colt to Jesus, threw their garments over it, and set Jesus on it.
13they took palm branches and went out to meet him. They were crying out,“Hosanna!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, the King of Israel!” 14Finding a young donkey, Jesus sat on it, just as it is written,
4Now all this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: 5“Say to the daughter of Zion,‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a donkey, and a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
15“Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion.Behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.” 16(His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, they remembered that these things were written about him, and that these things had been done to him.) 17Now the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was testifying about it. 18That is why a crowd went out to meet him, because they heard he had done this sign. 19So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are achieving nothing. Behold, the world has gone after him.”
8A very large crowd spread their garments on the road, and others cut down branches from the trees and also spread them on the road. 9The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed were crying out,“Hosanna to the Son of David!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!Hosanna in the highest!”
8Many people spread their garments on the road, and others cut down leafy branches from the trees and also spread them on the road. 9Those who went ahead of him and those who followed were crying out,“Hosanna!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming in the name of the Lord!Hosanna in the highest!”
36As he went along, people were spreading their garments on the road. 37And as he drew near to the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen, 38saying,“Blessed is the kingwho comes in the name of the Lord!Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!” 39But some of the Pharisees from among the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40In response he said to them, “I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out.” 41As he drew near to Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it, 42saying, “If only you had known, especially on this your day, what would bring about your peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes. 43For the days will come upon you when your enemies build a barricade around you and encircle you, hemming you in on every side. 44They will raze you to the ground, and your children within you. They will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”
10As he came into Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11So the crowds were saying, “This is Jesus the prophet, who is from Nazareth of Galilee.”
11aThen Jesus entered Jerusalem
14Then the lame and the blind came to him in the temple courts, and he healed them. 15But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did and the children crying out in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant 16and said to him, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes, have you never read,‘Out of the mouths of babies and nursing infantsyou have prepared praise’?”
11band went into the temple courts.
17And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there.
11cWhen he had looked around at everything, he went out to Bethany with the twelve, since the hour was already late.
Notes
Mount of Olives
The mountainous ridge called the Mount of Olives stretches totay from the Hebrew University Mount Scopus campus in the north to the Jewish cemetery and beyond, to the village of Silwan in the south. Between these two ends of the mountain are the olive trees from which the mountain takes its name. The area at the bottom of the mountain would have been the place for the olive gardens and an olive press, “Gat shemen” in Hebrew, from which the name “Gethsemane” comes.
The gospels record on more than one occasion Jesus’ sorrow for Jerusalem as he made his way down the slopes of the Mount of Olives. It was a path he would have known from childhood from His many visits to Jerusalem.
Down the road from Bethphage He came riding on a donkey colt with palm branches symbolic of Judaea strewn along the way. “Hosanna!” (“save now!”) was the cry upon the lips of the people (Matthew 21:1-9). This prayer from Psalm 118:25 was a request for salvation. Yet Jesus knew that these cries would be changed within a week to “Crucify him!” He wept again for Jerusalem, for He knew what would befall the people in less than one generation as the city would be besieged and taken.
