Return to Galilee, healing of woman who touched Jesus' garment, and raising of Jairus's daughter

| 18As he said these things to them, behold, a ruler came and bowed down before him, saying, “My daughter has just now died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” | 21When Jesus had again crossed over in the boat to the other side of the sea, a large crowd was gathered around him, and he was by the sea. 22And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, whose name was Jairus. When he saw Jesus, he fell down at his feet 23and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please come and lay your hands on her so that she may be healed, and she will live.” | 40Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they had all been waiting for him. 41And behold, there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus' feet and begged him to come to his house, 42abecause he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. |
| 19So Jesus rose and followed him, and so did his disciples. 20aAnd behold, a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years | 24So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25Now there was a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years. 26She had suffered a great deal under many physicians and had spent all she had, yet received no benefit from it, but had only grown worse. | 42bAs Jesus went on his way, the crowds were pressing in on him. 43Now there was a woman who had suffered from a flow of blood for twelve years, and even though she had spent her entire livelihood on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. |
| 20bcame up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment. 21For she said to herself, “If only I touch his garment, I will be healed.” | 27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. 28For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be healed.” 29Immediately her flow of blood was dried up, and she knew in her body that she had been healed from her affliction. 30Jesus immediately perceived in himself that power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” | 44She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of his garment, and the flow of her blood stopped at once. |
| 31His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 32But he kept looking around to see who had done it. | 45Then Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When everyone denied it, Peter and those who were with him said, “Master, the crowds are surrounding you and pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ” 46But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I know that power has gone out from me.” | |
| 22But when Jesus turned around and saw her, he said, “Take courage, daughter0x3B your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that hour. | 33Now the woman was frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, so she came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. 34Then Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.” | 47When the woman saw that she could not escape notice, she came trembling and fell down before him, and in the presence of all the people she told him the reason why she had touched him, and how she had been healed at once. 48Then Jesus said to her, “Take courage, daughter0x3B your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” |
| 35While he was still speaking, some people came from the ruler of the synagogue's house and said, “Your daughter has died0x3B why trouble the teacher any further?” 36But when Jesus heard what they said, he immediately said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be afraid0x3B only believe.” 37From that point he did not allow anyone to accompany him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38When he came to the ruler of the synagogue's house, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. | 49While he was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue's house and said to him, “Your daughter has died0x3B do not trouble the teacher.” 50But when Jesus heard this, he said to him in response, “Do not be afraid0x3B only believe, and she will be healed.” 51When he came to the house, Jesus allowed no one to go in, except Peter, John, James, and the child's father and mother. 52Meanwhile, all the people were weeping and mourning for her, but Jesus said, “Do not weep0x3B she is not dead but sleeping.” | |
| 23When Jesus came to the house of the ruler and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, 24he said to them, “Go away, for the girl is not dead but sleeping.” And they began laughing at him. | 39Then he went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40And they began laughing at him. But he put them all outside, took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in to where the child was lying down. | 53And they began laughing at him, knowing that she was dead. |
| 25But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took hold of the girl's hand, and she arose. | 41Then he took hold of the child's hand and said to her, “Talitha koumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42Immediately the girl got up and began to walk (for she was twelve years old), and they were overcome with great amazement. | 54But Jesus put them all outside, took hold of the girl's hand, and called out, “Child, arise!” 55Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then he told them to give her something to eat. |
| 26And news of this spread throughout that entire region. | 43Then he gave them strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and he told them to give her something to eat. | 56Her parents were amazed, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened. |
Notes
Sea of Galilee
The Sea of Galilee is a beautiful blue freshwater lake. Because it is shaped like a harp, it is called Yam Kinneret (Numbers 34:11) in Hebrew, from the word kinnor, which means “harp.” It was also known as the Sea of Tiberias (John 21:1) after the large city, built by Herod Antipas, which is located on its shores. It was also called Lake of Gennesaret (Luke 5:1)
The Sea of Galilee is fed by the Jordan River, which brings water from the melting snows of Mount Hermon to the north. Additional water comes from the numerous springs around the lake, many of which are hot springs. The hot water from these springs allows even tropical fish to thrive. The very high rate of evaporation from the lake raises the humidity to an average of 65% in the area over and around the lake; such an environment also enables tropical plants and fruit to grow.
The lake is now 12.5 miles long and 7 miles wide, with a circumference of 32 miles. It may have been slightly longer in Jesus’ time, since the lake may have receded somewhat in the north near Bethsaida. The surface of the lake is about 700 feet below sea level.
