Discussion of resurrection, Elijah, and John the Baptist

Coming down the mountain

Matthew 17:9-13Mark 9:9-13Luke 9:36b
9As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Do not tell anyone about the vision you saw until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.” 9As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10So they kept the matter to themselves, discussing what this rising from the dead could mean. 36bThe disciples kept silent and did not tell anyone in those days about any of the things they had seen.
10Then his disciples asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11Jesus answered them, “Elijah does indeed come first, and he will restore all things. 12But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. Even so the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.” 13Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist. 11Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12He answered them, “Elijah does indeed come first to restore all things. How then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13But I tell you that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written about him.”
