Matthew 4:18-22

Mark 1:16-20

18As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20So they immediately left their nets and followed him. 21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22So they immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.

16As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother (that is, Simon's brother) casting a net in the sea, for they were fishermen. 17Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18So they immediately left their nets and followed him. 19Going on a little farther from there, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother as they were in the boat mending their nets. 20Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

21They went to Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath Jesus went into the synagogue and began teaching. 22The people were astonished at his teaching, because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23Now in their synagogue there was a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit. He cried out, 24“Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

31band on the Sabbath he began teaching the people. 32They were astonished at his teaching, because his message was spoken with authority. 33Now in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean demonic spirit, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34“Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26So the unclean spirit convulsed the man and came out of him, crying out with a loud voice. 27All the people were amazed so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? What new teaching is this that with authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him?” 28And the news about him immediately spread throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

35But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out of him, having done him no harm. 36Amazement came over all the people, and they said to one another, “What kind of message is this? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out!” 37And news about him went out to every place in the surrounding region.

14When Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15So he touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she rose and began to serve him.

29After leaving the synagogue, they immediately went to the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30Now Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31So he went over to her and raised her up, taking hold of her hand. Immediately the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

38Then Jesus arose, left the synagogue, and entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39So he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. At once she rose and began to serve them.

16When evening came, many who were possessed by demons were brought to him, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. 17This was to fulfill what had been spoken by Isaiah the prophet: “He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

32When evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to Jesus all who were sick and those who were possessed by demons. 33The whole city was gathered together at the door, 34and he healed many who were sick with various diseases. He also cast out many demons, but he would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who he was.

40When the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus, and he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them. 41Demons also came out of many, crying out, “You are the Christ, the Son of God.” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

35Early the next morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus rose and departed. He went off to a desolate place and prayed there. 36Simon and his companions searched diligently for him, 37and when they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38Jesus said to them, “Let us go into the neighboring towns so that I may preach there also, for that is why I have come.”

42When daybreak came, Jesus departed and went to a desolate place. The crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But Jesus said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, for that is why I was sent.”

23Then Jesus went throughout all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people. 24So the news about him went out into all of Syria, and the people brought to him all who were sick with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics. And he healed them. 25And large crowds followed him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

39So he was preaching in their synagogues in all of Galilee and casting out demons.

44So he continued preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

Luke 5:1-11

1On one occasion, Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to listen to the word of God. 2He saw two boats moored beside the lake, but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one that was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and began teaching the crowds from the boat. 4When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 5Simon answered him, “Master, we have worked hard throughout the entire night and have caught nothing, but at your word I will let down the net.” 6When he and the men with him did so, they enclosed such a large number of fish that their net began to break. 7So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and assist them, and they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus' knees and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” 9For he and all who were with him were gripped with astonishment at the catch of fish they had taken, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” 11So they brought their boats to shore, left everything, and followed Jesus.

2And behold, a leper came and bowed down before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3So Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.

40Then a leper came up and knelt before him, begging him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” 41Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched the man, and said to him, “I am willing; be made clean.” 42When he said this, the leprosy immediately departed from the man, and he was made clean.

12While Jesus was in one of the towns, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. When the man saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 13So Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him.

4Then Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one, but go show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

43Then Jesus sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, 44saying to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 45But the man went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places. Yet people were coming to him from everywhere.

14Then Jesus ordered him to tell no one, but said, “Go show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 15But the news about Jesus spread even more, and large crowds would gather together to hear him and to be healed by him of their infirmities. 16But he would often withdraw to desolate places and pray.

1After getting into the boat, Jesus went back across the sea and came to his own city.

1A few days later Jesus went to Capernaum again, and the people heard that he was at home. 2Immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no longer any room, not even at the door, and he was speaking the word to them.

17On one of those days, as he was teaching, some Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was present to heal the people.

2aAnd behold, some men brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed.

3Then some people came to him, bringing a paralytic carried by four men. 4Since they were not able to come near Jesus because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was. After digging through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.

18And behold, some men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed. They were trying to bring him in and place him before Jesus. 19But when they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down through the tiles, together with his mat, into the middle of the crowd in front of Jesus.

2bWhen Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Take courage, son; your sins are forgiven you.” 3And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”

5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” 6Now some of the scribes were sitting there and questioning in their hearts: 7“Why does this man speak such blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

20When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 21But the scribes and the Pharisees began to question what Jesus said: “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

4Perceiving their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why are you thinking evil things in your hearts? 5Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—then he said to the paralytic—“Rise, pick up your bed, and go to your house.” 7So he rose and went to his house. 8When the crowds saw it, they were amazed and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

8Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves, so he said to them, “Why are you questioning these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your mat, and walk’? 10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11“I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go to your house.” 12So the man immediately rose, picked up his mat, and went out in front of them all, so that they were all amazed and began glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

22Aware of their thoughts, Jesus answered them, “Why are you questioning in your hearts? 23Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralyzed man—“I say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go to your house.” 25Immediately the man rose up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went to his house, glorifying God. 26Amazement seized them all, and they too began glorifying God. Filled with awe, they said, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”

13Once again Jesus went out by the sea. The entire crowd came to him, and he taught them.

9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth. Jesus said to him, “Follow me,” so Matthew rose and followed him.

14As he was walking along, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth. Jesus said to him, “Follow me,” so Levi rose and followed him.

27After this Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax booth. Jesus said to him, “Follow me,” 28and leaving everything behind, Levi rose and followed him.

10Later, as Jesus reclined at the table in Matthew's house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and reclined with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why is your teacher eating with tax collectors and sinners?”

15Later, as Jesus was reclining at the table in Levi's house, many tax collectors and sinners reclined with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16When the scribes and the Pharisees saw Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners, they said to his disciples, “Why is he eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?”

29Then Levi gave a great banquet for Jesus in his house, and there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others reclining at the table with them. 30But the scribes of the people and the Pharisees were grumbling at his disciples, saying, “Why are you eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?”

12When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “It is not the healthy who have need of a physician, but the sick. 13Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

17When Jesus heard this, he said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who have need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

31Jesus answered them, “It is not those who are well who have need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

14Then the disciples of John came to Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees often fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

18Now the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees were fasting. So some people came and said to Jesus, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

33Then they said to him, “Why do the disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?”

15Jesus said to them, “Can the bridegroom's attendants mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17Neither do people put new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the wineskins burst, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are destroyed. But new wine is put into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

19Jesus said to them, “Can the bridegroom's attendants fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20But the days are coming when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. 21“No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the garment's new patch pulls away from the old cloth, and a worse tear is made. 22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine bursts the wineskins, and the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are destroyed. But new wine must be put into new wineskins.”

34Jesus said to them, “Can you make the bridegroom's attendants fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35But those days are coming, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, they will fast in those days.” 36He also told them a parable: “No one puts a patch from a new garment on an old garment. Otherwise, he not only tears the new garment, but the patch from the new garment does not match the old garment. 37And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the wineskins and will itself be spilled, and the wineskins will be destroyed. 38But new wine must be put into new wineskins, and then both are preserved. 39And no one after drinking old wine immediately desires new wine, for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”
