Riches and the kingdom

Perea

Matthew 19:16-30Mark 10:17-31Luke 18:18-30
16And behold, a man came and said to him, “Good Teacher, what good thing must I do to have eternal life?” 17Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. But if you wish to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18The man said to him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not give false testimony, 19Honor your father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” [*][*] 17As he was setting out on the road, a man ran up, knelt before him, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 18Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ” [*] 18Then a certain ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not give false testimony, Honor your father and your mother.’ ” [*]
20The young man said to him, “All these I have kept from my youth0x3B what do I still lack?” 21Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven0x3B then come follow me.” 22But when the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions. 23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 20The man answered him, “Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.” 21As Jesus looked at him, he felt love for the man and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go and sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven0x3B and take up your cross and come follow me.” 22But the man was dejected by what Jesus said and went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions. 23Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How difficult it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” 21The man said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack: Sell everything you have and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven0x3B then come follow me.” 23But when the man heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was extremely rich. 24When Jesus saw that the man had become very sorrowful, he said, “How difficult it will be for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!
24Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how difficult it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God!
25When his disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and said, “Who then can be saved?” 26Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27Then Peter said to him in response, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you0x3B what then will there be for us?” 28Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, when all things are made new and the Son of Man sits on his throne of glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26They were completely astonished at this and said to one another, “Who then can be saved?” 27Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28Peter began to say to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” 29aJesus answered, “Truly I say to you, 25For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 26Those who heard this said, “Who then can be saved?” 27Jesus said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.” 28Then Peter said, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you.” 29aJesus said to them, “Truly I say to you,
29And everyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children, or fields for my name's sake, will receive a hundred times more and will inherit eternal life. 29bthere is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, mother, wife, children, or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the gospel, 30who will not receive now in this age a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. 29bthere is no one who has left house, parents, brothers, wife, or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not surely receive many times more in this present age, and in the age to come eternal life.”
30But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first. 31But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.”

Notes

Perea

Perea was the term used by the historian Flavius Josephus, and others, for a section of the territory east of The Jordan River, opposite Judea and Samaria. Although the word Perea is not found in the Scriptures, the area was mentioned frequently in the Gospels as the “land beyond the Jordan”. John the Baptist baptized in Perea, and was also martyred there at Herod’s fortress of Machaerus. Jesus Christ often visited Perea during His ministry, and had many followers from there, which at the time had a large Jewish population.

Jesus spent most of his final 3 months before Passion Week traveling around Perea, teaching in its towns and villages. Jesus had been in Jerusalem for the Feast of Dedication (John 10:22-39), and the Jews tried to stone him again. He escaped their grasp and went back across the Jordan into Perea for the final months before his crucifixion. During these months he taught his disciples about the cost of following him and he tried to prepare them for his coming death.

Today, most of Perea is in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
