Controversy over disciples' picking grain on the Sabbath

Perhaps Galilee

Matthew 12:1-8

Mark 2:23-28

Luke 6:1-5

1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and eat them. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Behold, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” 3He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for him or those who were with him to eat, but only for the priests? 5Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and yet are guiltless? 6But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.

23On the Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way, plucking heads of grain. 24So the Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are they doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 25He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry, he and those who were with him, 26how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except for the priests, and how he also gave it to those who were with him?”

1On the second major Sabbath, Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples were plucking heads of grain, rubbing off the husks in their hands, and eating them. 2But some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except for the priests, and how he also gave it to those who were with him?”

7But if you had known what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.

27Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

5Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”
