Jesus heals an invalid on the Sabbath

Jerusalem

John 5:1-9

1After this came the feast of the Jews, so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate there is a pool, called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has five porticoes. 3In the porticoes were lying a great multitude of disabled people, including the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed, who were waiting for the moving of the water. 4For at times an angel would go down into the pool and stir up the water. The first person who stepped in after the water was stirred up was healed of whatever disease he had. 5One man was there who had been suffering in his disability for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been in that condition for a long time already, he said to him, “Do you want to be made well?” 7The disabled man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I am going, another goes down before me.” 8Jesus said to him, “Rise, pick up your mat, and walk.” 9Immediately the man was made well, so he picked up his mat and began to walk. Now that day was a Sabbath.

Effort to kill Jesus for breaking the Sabbath and saying he was equal with God

Jerusalem

John 5:10-18

10So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to pick up your mat.” 11He answered them, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ” 12So they asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?” 13But the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd in that place. 14After this Jesus found the man in the temple courts and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, lest something worse happen to you.” 15Then the man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16So the Jews began persecuting Jesus and seeking to kill him, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus responded to them, “My Father is still working even now, and I too am working.” 18So the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

Discourse demonstrating the Son's equality with the Father

Jerusalem

John 5:19-47

19So Jesus responded to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does in the same way. 20For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself does. And he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes. 22The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25“Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live. 26For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 27And he has given the Son authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not be amazed at this, because an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, those who have done good to a resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to a resurrection of judgment. 30“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will, but the will of the Father who sent me. 31“If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. 32There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true. 33You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34Now I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35John was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for an hour in his light. 36But I have testimony greater than John's. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, testify that the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me has himself testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his form. 38And you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he sent. 39You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and it is these that testify about me, 40yet you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life. 41I do not receive glory from men. 42But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. 43I have come in the name of my Father, and yet you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44How can you believe when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that is from the only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father. The one who accuses you is Moses, in whom you have set your hope. 46If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

Controversy over disciples' picking grain on the Sabbath

Perhaps Galilee

Matthew 12:1-8

Mark 2:23-28

Luke 6:1-5

1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and eat them. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Behold, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” 3He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4how he entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which was not lawful for him or those who were with him to eat, but only for the priests? 5Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and yet are guiltless? 6But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.

23On the Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way, plucking heads of grain. 24So the Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why are they doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 25He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry, he and those who were with him, 26how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except for the priests, and how he also gave it to those who were with him?”

1On the second major Sabbath, Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples were plucking heads of grain, rubbing off the husks in their hands, and eating them. 2But some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except for the priests, and how he also gave it to those who were with him?”

7But if you had known what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless.

27Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

5Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Section 51

Healing of a man's shriveled hand on the Sabbath

In a synagogue in Galilee

Matthew 12:9-14

Mark 3:1-6

Luke 6:6-11

9Then he departed from there and went into their synagogue. 10And behold, there was a man who had a withered hand. In order to accuse Jesus, the Pharisees asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” 11He said to them, “What man among you who has a sheep that falls into a pit on the Sabbath will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12Of how much more value is a person than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

1Once again Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2Now the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see if he would heal the man on the Sabbath, so that they could accuse him. 3And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise and come forward.” 4Then Jesus said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.

6On another Sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7Now the scribes and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find an accusation against him. 8But he knew their thoughts and said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise and stand here.” So he rose and stood there. 9Then Jesus said to them, “Let me ask you something: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?”

13Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored, as sound as the other. 14But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus as to how they might destroy him.

5After looking around at them with anger, grieved by the hardness of their hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and his hand was restored, as sound as the other. 6Then the Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against Jesus as to how they might destroy him.

10And after looking around at them all, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” The man did so, and his hand was restored, as sound as the other. 11But the scribes and Pharisees were filled with mindless rage and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Section 52

Withdrawal to the Sea of Galilee with large crowds from many places

By the Sea of Galilee

Matthew 12:15-21

Mark 3:7-12

15Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from there. Large crowds followed him, and he healed them all

7But Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and also from Judea, 8from Jerusalem, from Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. A great multitude of people from around Tyre and Sidon also came to him when they heard about everything he was doing. 9Then he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, so that the crowd would not crush him. 10For he had healed many, so that all who had afflictions were pressing toward him to touch him. 11Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they would fall down before him and cry out, “You are the Son of God.”

16and warned them not to make him known. 17This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet: 18“Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased.I will put my Spirit upon him,and he will declare justice to the Gentiles. 19He will not quarrel, nor will he cry out,nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. 20A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not extinguish, until he brings justice to victory. 21And in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

12But he would strictly warn them not to make him known.
